How Temperature Scale Conversions Work
Unlike linear dimensional measurements (such as length or mass), temperature scales do not share a common zero point. Celsius and Kelvin share the same degree increment but differ by an offset of 273.15, while Fahrenheit uses a smaller degree scale (1.8 Fahrenheit degrees per 1 Celsius degree) with freezing pegged at 32°F.
Standard Temperature Conversion Formulas
°F = (°C * 1.8) + 32
°C = (°F - 32) / 1.8
K = °C + 273.15
Worked Example: Boiling Point of Water (100°C)
Formula: (100 * 1.8) + 32
Multiplication: 180 + 32 = 212°F
Kelvin Conversion: 100 + 273.15 = 373.15 K
