How Scientific Calculation & Mathematical Expression Parsing Work
A scientific calculator extends standard arithmetic by supporting higher-order algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential operations. Modern engineering, physics, finance, and academic coursework rely on expression evaluators that accurately process nested formulas while adhering strictly to algebraic order of operations.
Expressions are parsed left-to-right following conventional hierarchy:
- P / B: Parentheses and bracketed sub-expressions evaluate first.
- E / O: Exponents, roots (sqrt), and functional calls (sin, cos, log).
- MD / DM: Multiplication and division from left to right.
- AS / AS: Addition and subtraction from left to right.
Supported Mathematical Functions & Constants
sin(x), cos(x), tan(x) evaluated in radians; pi constant (3.14159...).
log(x) for base-10, ln(x) for natural logarithm, e constant (2.71828...), x^y powers.
Worked Expression Example
Input Expression: sin(pi / 6) + sqrt(16) * log(100)
Step 1 (Trig & Constant): sin(3.14159 / 6) = sin(0.523598) = 0.5
Step 2 (Root & Log): sqrt(16) = 4; log10(100) = 2
Step 3 (Multiplication): 4 * 2 = 8
Step 4 (Addition): 0.5 + 8 = 8.5
