How Speed & Velocity Unit Conversions Work
Speed measures the rate of motion over time (distance divided by time). Road vehicle speedometers in the United States and United Kingdom display miles per hour (mph), whereas the majority of the world uses kilometers per hour (km/h). Aviation and marine shipping rely on nautical knots, while physics and scientific equations use meters per second (m/s).
Speed Benchmarks (Base: Meters per Second)
Worked Example: 60 MPH Highway Speed to KM/H
Base m/s: 60 mph * 0.44704 m/s = 26.8224 m/s
Target km/h: 26.8224 / 0.277778 = 96.56 km/h
Result: A 60 mph speed limit corresponds to approximately 96.6 km/h.
Compute running pace in minutes and seconds per kilometer or mile.
