Client-Side Video Playback Speed Adjustment & Time-Stretching
Adjusting video tempo serves both creative and practical purposes: slow-motion effects emphasize athletic technique, dramatic action, or scientific phenomena, while fast-motion creates captivating timelapses and condenses long screen recordings for quick review.
WebTorq's Video Speed Changer allows you to accelerate or decelerate video playback directly inside your browser. Operating with client-side WebAssembly, speed adjustments execute locally with complete data privacy.
The Mathematics of Timestamp Rescaling (PTS Adjustment)
Video frames carry Presentation Timestamps (PTS) that dictate when each frame appears on screen:
- Acceleration (e.g. 2.0x): Each frame's PTS is multiplied by 0.5. The interval between frames is halved, doubling the perceived playback rate.
- Deceleration (e.g. 0.5x): Each frame's PTS is doubled, stretching the temporal distance between frames for smooth slow motion.
- Audio Time-Stretching (WSOLA): Waveform Similarity Overlap-Add (WSOLA) segments audio into overlapping frames, repositioning them along the new timeline to alter duration while preserving pitch.
Recommended Speed Presets by Use Case
| Speed Multiplier | Effect Type | Ideal Application |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25x – 0.5x | Quarter / Half Speed Slow Motion | Sports analysis, choreography, mechanical demos |
| 1.25x – 1.5x | Productivity Boost | Lecture review, meeting recordings, tutorials |
| 2.0x | Timelapse / Fast Motion | Coding sessions, drawing timelapses, travel clips |
